1. The reading area.
This is a section with comfortable seating, where students can read during a reading workshop. In this section there will be plenty of shelves that are full of books. These books will have a very wide range. The books will cover a variety of topics, genre, and reading levels. There will be a storage bin next to the reading section. In this storage bin students will find book reviews written by myself and other students. This will help students who are struggling to find a title. On top of the storage bin there will be a book sign out sheet. This way I can allow students to take texts home and I will be able to keep track of who has what.
2. The writing area.
This is a section where students can work on their writing. There is storage bins, which contains examples of good writing, student papers, and articles. Students will be able to get good examples of writing that they can imitate from this bin. There are also shelves in this area. Students will find writing reference materials here. (ex: encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauruses, citation, writing, and grammar guides) In this section there is also a student group table. At this table students can work together editing their papers, using each other as guides.
3. The publishing area.
This is an area with at least one computer and printer (hopefully several). This is where students will be able to type up their work and publish it. They will be able to create covers and art to go along with their work. This area will allow the students to take their writing to the next step. Having a nice printed copies of their work will allow the students to feel more accomplished.
4. The student work area.
This is a section where students can work on a variety of work during workshops. They can use these tables for discussions, individual work, group work. At the beginning of the workshop one of these three tables will be designated as the silent table. This is a table where students can work in quietly, when they need to concentrate. This table will usually be the one farthest away from the most activity.
5. The student/teacher conference area.
This is the area where students can work with the teacher. It is right near the teacher desk so the teacher has access to all the materials. The table is U shaped, the teacher can access several students at once. Each student will be expected to meet with he teacher during workshops. When a student moves to this area it will notify the teacher that they need help or have a question. This makes it easier for the teacher to know when a student is in need of guidance during a workshop.
6. The mini-lesson area
This is a small open section where the teacher can guide mini-lessons before a workshop. There is a projector here where the teacher can show students important information or websites that may help them in their workshop. This area can also be used for students reporting their work. They can present book reviews, presentations, or papers in this area.
